Wool Blankets & Plaids

Wool Blankets & Plaids from Scotland and Ireland

The British Isles, Scotland and Ireland above all, lie in a climate zone that is often harsh and rugged. In the past, the population — frequently working outdoors as shepherds or fishermen — was heavily exposed to the inhospitable weather. That's also why sheep's wool was traditionally used there for clothing and home textiles. Scottish and Irish wool remains highly popular today, and there is a long tradition of crafting wool blankets to create a cosy, welcoming home. Our partners use 100% pure natural fibres — from lambswool to luxurious Merino Possum knitted throws — in beautiful traditional and modern designs.

Wool blankets: handcrafted from British or Irish wool

The benefits of our wool blankets and plaids at a glance:

  • 100% pure natural fibre: a wide choice of virgin wool, lambswool, merino wool or Merino Possum
  • Mulesing-free
  • We prefer carefully selected organic wool, as the sheep are never exposed to antibiotics or other medications — which is especially kind to skin that comes into contact with the wool. As a result, our blankets are particularly skin-friendly.
  • Made with local wool in Scotland, Ireland and Wales
  • Wool provides a cosy, soothing warmth like no other material
  • Sourced from our long-standing Scottish, Irish and New Zealand partners — small mills, some dating back to the 19th century, who are masters of their craft and have worked with wool for generations. Get a glimpse inside the Kerry Woolen Mill here.
  • A wide selection ranging from tartan blankets in Royal Stewart to elegant blankets in muted tones — classic patterns such as herringbone are complemented by innovative designs like the beehive pattern
  • Machine washable on a wool cycle with wool detergent

What makes our wool blankets and plaids special

Our wool blankets and plaids keep you warm, are soft yet hard-wearing and durable — even suitable for outdoor use. As a cuddly throw on the sofa, for a cosy home, or as a picnic blanket: they suit every occasion.

Our designs range from classic tartans to fashionable new patterns to plain knitted throws.

Wool blankets are also particularly sustainable: wool is a renewable resource, and its production places little burden on the environment. In this way, wool blankets — and the use of wool in general — help preserve rural landscapes and biodiversity.

At House of Scotland, we carry a wide range of high-quality wool blankets and plaids — enjoy browsing!
