Our tartan stoles are woven from 100% lambswool in a traditional mill in Scotland. At 180 × 70 cm they are larger than a scarf and wonderfully versatile: as a stole with an evening dress, as a wrap over your coat, as a wide checked scarf or for snuggling up on the sofa. Which stole goes with an evening dress?
A lambswool stole is the warm alternative to a thin silk wrap – ideal for weddings, theatre or opera evenings in the cooler months. With a black or navy evening dress, a bold tartan such as Lindsay Modern, Buchanan Berry or Buchanan Blue adds an elegant accent. Coloured or patterned dresses pair well with calmer tartans such as Forth Weathered or Dundee Old Weathered, and light dresses with the soft pastel shades of Hame. Drape the stole loosely over your shoulders and elbows: it covers your back and keeps you warm without hiding the dress.
How do I tie a stole as a scarf?
Fold the stole lengthwise once or twice and place it around your neck. Let the ends hang down in front, tie them once loosely, or fold the stole in half and pull both ends through the loop. This turns it into a wide, warm winter scarf in tartan.
What is a stole?
A stole is a wide, long wrap worn over the shoulders or around the neck. It is much wider than a scarf, so it keeps your shoulders and upper body warm. Our stoles measure 180 × 70 cm, including fringes.
How do you wear a stole?
The classic way is to drape the stole open over both shoulders and let the ends hang in front. For a more relaxed look, toss one end loosely over the opposite shoulder. Over a coat or tweed jacket it becomes a warming wrap – especially lovely in classics such as Black Watch or Thomson Camel.

A stole should be long enough to drape over your shoulders and hang loosely in front. At 180 cm long and 70 cm wide, our stoles can be worn open as a shoulder wrap or folded as a scarf.
What is lambswool?
Lambswool comes from the first shearing of young sheep. It is especially fine and soft, keeps you warm, is breathable and is much less itchy than ordinary wool.
How do you wash lambswool?
Airing is usually enough, as wool is largely self-cleaning. If needed, wash the stole by hand or on a wool cycle with wool detergent, gently press out the water – do not wring – and dry it flat.
