Sir David Lindsay of Glenesk, who married a daughter of the Scottish king, was created Earl of Crawford in 1398. The 4th Earl, sometimes known as 'Earl Beardie', plotted against the Crown and was decisively defeated by the Earl of Huntly in 1452, losing his lands and titles. He was later pardoned. His son, the 5th Earl, was created Duke of Montrose in 1488, the first dukedom granted to a Scotsman outside the royal family. The dukedom became extinct upon his death in 1495. The Lindsays were known as 'The Lightsome Lindsays'. The seat of the Earls of Crawford and Balcarres is at Balcarres in Fife.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0941/0045/5766/files/abscl-lin-m-lindsay-moderrn-lw-scarf-2019-72dpi-rgb_c6146236-2bab-445e-b9d1-2d6895cda005.jpg?v=1765807845
